I Can't Say How This Feels

Acrylic on Wood Panels; 10 x 10 and 8 x 8 inch panels

In this set, I return to the experience of emotional upheaval and strained embodiment that comes from living with an invisible chronic illness. Given the invisible nature of the illness and the resulting difficulty of describing it to others, I have found it impossible to represent my experience in words despite my love for language. I’m left with a blurry impression of experience that resembles colour, sound, or even silence rather than an articulate representation. For this set of paintings, then, I don’t come at my illness with symbols and metaphors like I do with most of my other works. Rather, I try to tap into the unconscious, to my intuitions and emotions around this illness that have rendered me mute on the subject. Here there are no signs or symbols, but a spontaneous flood of obscured shapes and colours.
