The Art of Hand Stitching: Group Classes

Traditional Hand Stitching

Kantha and Kawandi Quilting Styles

Discover traditional Kantha and Kawandi hand-stitching and quilting techniques. Originating in Southeast Asia and Africa respectively, these two styles join fabric layers together using a traditional running-stitch to make one larger piece of usable cloth. The layers are often remnants of saris or other thin cotton fabrics and up-cycled into a hand-sewn quilt. In this class we will hand stitch a small project—either a table runner or two place-mats. Once you feel confident with the running stitches and the layering techniques, you’ll be ready to take on larger projects like a lap quilt or bed quilt!

Length: 2 sessions, 2 hours each (4 hours total)

Group Fee (2-5 participants): $180 total

Location: Blue Leaf Studio, 1475 King Edward Ave. West, Vancouver BC

Supplies: $15 per person – includes embroidery needles and thread, thin cotton fabric pieces + an inner fabric layer (12 x 60 inches for a table runner or two 12 x 18 inch pieces for place-mats)
